Woods to use Sydney as Presidents warm-up

Tiger Woods has been seen practicing at the Atlanta Athletic Club, the first time he was seen on the course since he succumbed to a knee injury last May during the Players’ Championship. Atlanta is the venue for the PGA Championship next week.

Woods, who has not participated and not won any tournament at all for the past two years since his injury, has fallen to number 28 in the world rankings. He has sacked his long-time caddy Steve Williams a week ago but has not announced a new one.

The former golf number one is set to play the Australian Open a week before the opening of the Presidents Cup. This will be the first time that Woods will appear in Sydney since his first year as a professional.

According to Golf Australia, Woods is set to compete on November 10-13 at The Lakes against the defending champions like Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Geoff Ogilvy as well as Greg Norman and Fred Couples, the captains of the Presidents Cup.

The Presidents Cup is scheduled at Royal Melbourne the following week. Woods stands at No. 26 at the Presidents Cup after his left knee injuries caused him to miss many tournaments in the past three months. While only the top 10 Americans would qualify for the US team on September 18, there is a great chance that Woods would be picked by Couples provided his game is in shape.

The announcement could only mean that Woods expects to play in the Presidents Cup and that his leg is already fully healed.

“I’m anxious to return,” Woods said to Golf Australia. “I have a great affinity for playing golf in Australia, and I’m looking forward to competing against an outstanding field.”
