Apparently, golf is not always about good results and sometimes about fame and relations. Though Tiger Woods’ performance over this season has not been so good, Tiger Woods got picked by United States captain Fred Couples for the Presidents Cup.
There is no doubt that Tiger did not really deserve to get on the U.S. President Cup team. He has not won any titles over the two past years and turned in an awful performance after April’s Masters. After returning from a long injury-related break, Woods putted only in six rounds at the Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship, shooting under par just once.
The standings reflect the sad situation with the once-great golfer. Woods dropped out of the FedEx Cup points list top 125. And yet, he got chosen thanks to a good relationship with Fred Couples. All he had to do was to say that he was considering playing in the PGA Tour Fall Series as Couples wanted Tiger to play more.
Luckily for the U.S. team, the best PGA Tour golfers already got to the team thanks to the automatic qualification. However, some good golf players like Rickie Fowler or Keegan Bradley who would have performed better for the team will have to work really hard to make the cut.
There is a theory that Tiger Woods was picked because even though he is not in his best shape, he is still very famous and can attract a lot of spectators and, hence, money to the tournament.
