Due to the current economy and a weak pound this year’s St Andrews Open winner will £100,000 more than last year’s winner Stewart Cink was awarded.
Peter Dawson stated ”The Open Championship sits at the forefront of world golf and it is appropriate that our prize fund reflects that position in the game.
”Over the last 18 months we have had to take account of the pound’s weakened position against the US Dollar and the Euro and we have increased our prize money accordingly.”
This will increase the total prize money to over £4.5 million with the winner receiving £850,000 which is now £130,000 more than Woods received when he was victorious in 2005 and going back further John Daly only received £125,000 when he won the 1995 Open via a playoff with Costantino Rocca.
The runner up at the home of golf is due to receive half a million in prize money and this year’s open will even award the last place competitor with £2,250 who would be sat in 157th place.
