Golf News – PGA Championship 2008 – The Favourites

The odds before the start of this summer’s PGA Championship for the top three had Padraig Harrington, Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood as favourites for lifting the title.

Padraig Harrington wins PGA Championship

The Irishman stormed to victory usign wilson golf clubs on the final day after composing himself from three shots behind on the final day, closing the championship on 4-under 66 to enter the record books as the fourth golfer in history to win both PGA and Open Championships in the same season. Shooting a 32 on the back nine, his finishing was impeccable with three important putts nailed down the stretch. Catching Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis on the 16th with a 12-foot par finish taking him into the lead with an amazing birdie on the par-3 17th hole. Victory was in his sights after toppling Garcia with an 18-ft par to record a two shot victory to win the championship.

Phil Mickelson was favourite in Tiger Woods’ absence

Despite being one of the favourites to lift the trophy at the Oakland Hills Country Club, Mickelson had to settle for a seventh place finish, some seven shots behind Harrington.  The world’s number two player shot a par 70 for a four round score of 4-over 284.

Westwood fails to make the cut

After starting this year’s championship with high expectations – Westwood struggled on the first day finishing 7-over par 77, triggering a scathing attack from the player on the course design and set-up of ‘monster’. Westwood’s aspirations of victory at the PGA followed a third place at this year’s US Open and tie for second at the Bridgestone Invitational – unfortunately, a birdie-free first round including 5 bogeys and a double bogey sealed his fate leaving Westwood to miss the cut.
