LED vs traditional Christmas lights

Christmas all over the world is still characterized by lights whether in Christmas trees, homes or concrete structures. However, it seems people now favor Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs instead of the traditional light sets.

Experts claim that LED lights, which are more expensive than the traditional lights, will allow big savings on electric bills. And while there are consumers who doubt if the savings are worth the price of Led lights, it seems that even retail stores are all for it.

Take for example Walmart as well as Target and Lowe’s, two establishments that now sell more LED lights than the traditional lights. The traditional lights are however being sold at a bargain price of $2.48 per box.

Consumers Reports Magazine says consumers can save on their power bills when they use led lights as they use between 50 to 90 percent less power. LED lights are however dimmer compared to the traditional lights, but they are safer and they last longer.

Every strand of miniature lights will result to a savings of between $1 to $2 or roughly 300 hours. With homeowners using an average of 10 strands, it could mean savings of at least $10 for this month’s power bills.

Consumers however rue the fact that LED lights require a more expensive initial cash outlay. Some have a hard time choosing between the $9.98 cost of a box of LED light with 60 bulbs compared to the only $2.48 cost of standard bulbs.

Lawrence Musyj, director of energy conservation of Enwin Utilities, said the use of energy-efficient LED lights on the Christmas tree is one of the easiest ways to find extra money during the Holiday season.

“You will see that you are going to save on average 70 to 80 per cent compared to the old traditional lights,” said Musyj.

“Traditional lights” include the incandescent lights many people use to deck out the holiday tree and the exterior of their home.
