At home on the range

Always thought about trying your hand at golf but too intimidated to set foot on the first tee? Are you an experienced golfer whose game is going down the pan, not the pin? Do you feel like you want to make some tweaks to your game but don’t want to hold up play?

Lots of questions, but only one definitive answer – head to the driving range!

There are many reasons why the driving range is a great option for novice and veteran golfers alike. Here’s a couple:

  • Try before you buy. Many like the thought of playing a round of golf in the height of the British summer (whatever that is), surrounded by greenery, taking in the glorious fresh air. The problem is, golf can be expensive and committing to a course membership only to find that you either can’t stand the game after all or you only make contact with the ball one swing in ten, just seems like a bit of a risk. The sensible option, therefore, is to book yourself into a driving range to see whether you enjoy it and you happen to be a complete natural and you can’t believe you’ve put it off for so long!
  • Getting to grips with new clubs. You’ve either bought, or been bought, a new set of clubs that look and feel amazing when swung in the back garden. But how do they go out on the course? If you’re too nervous about throwing yourself in at the deep end then why not give that 5 Wood a trial run at the range?
  • Trying something new. Having read a magazine article on Luke Donald you’re keen to try out his advice on hitting the perfect tee shot. Dare you trial his technique at the club or would you prefer the relative safe haven of the driving range? Many opt for the latter.
  • Practice, practice, practice. The good thing about a driving range is that you can repeat the same shot ten, a hundred, a thousand times if you wish, until you get it right, without irking those on the hole behind you. Take all the time in the world to rectify that tendency to pull your tee shot and sort that under-hit 9 Iron, without someone watching your every move.
