President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed that the organizers of the opposition protests in Iranian City, which he said are “going nowhere”, will be punished.

The clash between the government’s security forces and the protesters has resulted to the death of two people and the wounding of several others.

The State television was told by Ahmadinejad that the “enemies” were trying to “tarnish the Iranian nation’s brilliance”. The response of the authorities on the protest actions in Iran was however sharply criticized by US President Barack Obama.

“I find it ironic that you’ve got the Iranian regime pretending to celebrate what happened in Egypt, when in fact they have acted in direct contrast to what happened in Egypt by gunning down and beating people who were trying to express themselves peacefully,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

While the US could not dictate on what is going to happen inside Iran, Obama said he hoped people would have the “courage to be able to express their yearning for greater freedom and a more representative government”.

The protests in Theran and other major cities in Iran were dismissed by Ahmadinejad saying the undermining of last Friday’s rally was meant to mark the Islamic Revolution’s 32nd anniversary.

“It is clear the Iranian nation has enemies because it is a nation that wants to shine, conquer peaks and change [its international] relations,” he said.

He added: “Of course, there is a lot of hostility against the government. But they knew that they would get nowhere.”

Mr Ahmadinejad said the organisers of the protests wanted “just wanted to tarnish the Iranian nation’s brilliance”.

“It is a shining sun. They threw some dust towards the sun… but the dust will return to their eyes.”

The crowd that gathered at the Azadi Square in Theran Monday was a show of solidarity for the Tunisia uprising in Egypt. Many of the protesters chanted “Death to dictators”.

Mohsen Asgari of the BBC, who was at the rally, said motorbike-riding men charged the crowd with batons while tear gasses were fired by the police.
