McIlroy and Wozniacki in love match link

US Open champion Rory McIlroy may have separated from his childhood sweetheart Holly Sweeney but has been romantically linked with tennis world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

The blossoming relationship helped McIlroy get over his failed attempt at a back-to-back majors at Sandwich as the Irishman took Wozniacki to dinner in London. Wozniacki was in the UK for a photoshoot with Stella McCartney and Adidas.

McIlroy’s management company confirmed that he has split with his long-time girlfriend during eve of the Open Championship at Sandwich.

“Rory McIlroy’s long-time relationship with Sweeney came to an amicable end before the Open Championship,” International Sports Management confirmed.

McIlroy may have spotted Wozniacki while he was at Wimbledon’s Royal Box as a guest. The two met a few days later on July 2 during a boxing match where David Haye was defeated by Wladimir Klitschko.

“Fantastic fight! Also met Rory McIlory, who was sitting just behind me:) Really down to earth great guy,” Wozniacki wrote on her Twitter page after the fight.

The two have exchanged tweets since then, with McIlroy using the social networking site to greet Wozniacki on her 21st birthday last week saying “You’re getting old”.

“At least now you will be able to buy me a drink in the US,” she replied. “Not only in Hamburg”.

Sweeney provided a shoulder to cry on when McIlroy suffered a final day collapse in Augusta in April but was not at the Congressional during the US Open where McIlroy emerged the champion.

“She takes my mind off golf… and having her there made Sunday night a lot easier, –having someone there you really know,” McIlroy said of his long-term girlfriend.
