PAOK Thessaloniki netted twice on Wednesday to defeat Tottenham with ten men and snatch a place in the Round of 32 of the Europa League.

The Greek side managed to score two goals through Dimitris Salpingidis and Stefanos Athanasiadis before their team mate got a red card for handling the ball. Tottenham’s Croatian international Luka Modric scored from the penalty spot but PAOK still claimed a 2-1 victory, leaving the Premier League side facing elimination.

Five other teams also reached the next round of the Europa League. Ex- champions Atletico Madrid clinched a 1-0 win at Celtic, Braga defeated Birmingham 1-0, and advanced with a goalless draw against Austria Vienna. Standard Liege and Hannover also reached the knockout stage. Hannover lost the match 2-0 to Standard Liege but even the losing side went through to the next stage because Group B’s Vorskla Poltava and FC Copenhagen settled for a 1-1 draw.

Metalist took the top spot in Group G despite drawing for the first time in five games. This left AZ Alkmaar in a precarious position as the Dutch side needs to beat the Ukrainian team to take second place and advance instead of Austria Vienna.

The other twelve matches will be staged on Thursday, with Sporting Lisbon, Lazio, FC Twente and Paris Saint-Germain to vie for a berth to the next round.
