England’s Luke Donald wins the Madrid Masters golf European Tour Golfing event in spain.

Donald secured a vital eagle on the 16th hole of his final round to win the Madrid Masters by one stroke ahead of Welshman Rhys Davies. Donald and Davies had battled all weekend but the eagle on the 16th hole proved decisive.

Donald and Davies went into the back nine with three pars each and Molinari joined the Welsh golfer with a chip-in birdie at the 12th. Molinari bogeyed the 13, and set him back alongside Graeme McDowell – who also birdied 13. At that stage, he and Molinari were two behind Donald and Davies only one off the lead.

Just as Davies made birdy at the 15th, Molinari eagled 16 for the second time in a week – and this meant there was a three-way tie at 19 under par.

Donald eagled the 16th, but his lead was only one as Davies birdied. McDowell closed with four pars for a 65 and 17 under. He was in the clubohouse in fourth place. Donald made par at the last two holes and gave home his first victory in four years. His previous win was in 2006 on the US Tour.

The eagle came while Donald was tied with Davies and Italian Francesco Molinari, and eagle at 16 and two closing pars Donald clinched the title with a round of 21-under-par total for the tournament. Davies, already a winner in Morocco back in March, birdied 15 and 16, but had no choice but to settle for second place with Molinari third.
