Amateur Harris English won the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, becoming the second amateur who claimed a victory in a Nationwide event this year.
The victory of Harris English, 22 who has just finished his senior year at the University of Georgia followed the win of Russell Henley at the Stadion Classic at UGA on the Nationwide Tour.
In what resembled a college event more than a Nationwide tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course, English banged his final birdie from 10 feet on the last hole to capture a victory and leave behind another amateur, John Peterson of the Louisiana State University
Top-placed English and third-placed Peterson could not take money as amateur golfers so Kyle Reifers seized the entire prize fund of $144,000, rocketing 47 places up to the fifth spot on the Nationwide Tour money list.
English captured a victory in the Southern Amateur two weeks ago, and Peterson became the individual champion of the NCAA tournament in June. Thanks to claiming this win, English will gain status on next year’s Nationwide Tour.
Harris and Russell hope to get a berth to the Walker Cup in fall. The U.S. Amateur champion who set a 4-0 match record at the 2009 Walker Cup, Peter Uihlein, took ninth place.
